Several people have been killed and injured in attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen, government sources said on Thursday.

At least 10 people were killed and five others injured, sources from the internationally recognized government said. Other sources spoke of a total of 45 people killed or injured.

There was initially no official confirmation, but the Shiite militia said it killed and injured "hundreds" of fighters allied with Saudi Arabia. The Houthis also claimed to have destroyed and burnt down several military bases and weapons depots.

The militia attacked targets in the Yemeni provinces of Marib and Hadhramaut with missiles and drones, dpa learned from government circles.

The two oil-rich provinces have long been contested in the country's civil war, which has been ongoing for more than 10 years.

The Yemeni government is supported by Saudi Arabia. The kingdom's conflict with the Houthis escalated again a few weeks ago with airstrikes in the capital Sana'a, which is controlled by the Houthis.

An unofficial ceasefire has been in place in the civil war since 2022, but there are concerns the conflict could flare up again.

The Houthis have also recently attacked several Saudi ships or forced them to change course.
