Fresh waves of drone strikes have dealt another blow to Russia's ability to fund its invasion of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday.

"Today, our long-range sanctions have once again succeeded in curbing Russia's oil revenues, which it uses to fund the war and the killing of Ukrainians," the Ukrainian leader wrote on Telegram.

"The Ukrainian Defence Forces have struck the aggressor's targets at a distance of over 1,300 kilometres from the front line," he wrote, posting a compilation of videos showing huge columns of smoke rising into the air.

Zelensky reported one attack on the Bashneft-Novoil refinery in the city of Ufa in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan. Authorities there had reported a fire in the industrial area the previous day.

Ufa's three refineries were already targeted in Ukrainian attacks in June, July and early August.

The president also cited a successful repeat attack on a refinery in Yaroslavl, north of the capital Moscow. The region's governor, Mikhail Yevraev, said on social media that 93 drones had been intercepted in the largest enemy drone attack on the refinery to date.

Falling debris reportedly sparked fires on its grounds and at three private homes, with four people said to have suffered injuries from metal debris.

In Moscow, the Ministry of Defence reported that a total of 605 enemy drones had been intercepted overnight over Russia and the Crimean Peninsula, illegally annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

As well as mounting fierce resistance on the ground along a more than 1,200-kilometre frontline, Kiev in recent months massively stepped up its aerial campaign against Russian military supply lines and infrastructure.
